Strange, at first sight, alliance of an
ex-reporter and an ex-architect became one of the most popular dance
project of our time. They both took up music by chance. They don't give
regular concerts and don't make regular albums, and they can afford it.
They are the Pet Shop Boys.
"We came out in the 80s when it was an advantage not
to be a good musicians, not to be a good singer [laugh]. But
fortunately things have turned around in the 90s.
Everyone can do everything now."
Chris Lowe, 1997.
There are two most interesting events in every music group's history: the meeting for
the first time and the publishing of the first song. The meeting of Neil Tennant and
Chris Lowe was just a mere chance, which is still amazing for the fans. Full of misty
memories, the legend says that Chris was laughing gaily looking at the shelves in a music
store in Kings Road, and he attracted Neil's attention, who came to this very shop looking
for some connectors for his synthesizer. It's a mystery how Neil managed to start talking
and to make friends with Chris and how they didn't part and lose each other in the vast city.
However, since then Chris and Neil had begun to write songs, sending them by mail. At that
time Chris was studying in an architecture college in Liverpool, and Neil was working in
the famous "Smash Hits" magazine in London. Once Neil got a chance to go to the United
States - on a business trip - to make an interview with Sting. In New York City he met
Bobby Orlando, who helped the boys to produce the "West End Girls" single.
The single became a club hit and didn't draw the attention of the public, but since
then the boys were able to hope for something. In 1985 remixed "West End Girls" single
was published in Great Britain under the famous EMI company label. As it immediately reached
the top of the hit-lists all over the world, it started their great success. The debut
"Please" album was published in 1986 and since then the popularity of the Pet Shop Boys
has been growing all the time.
From the very beginning the duet didn't go under the
definition of traditional pop-music and with time even most cynical and skeptical
journalists stopped treating their work with irony, as they did with others.
The Pet Shop Boys have never followed the fashion, they have always been one step
forward or sometimes they made a step aside to let the trivial go.
They took part in countless festivals and concerts all over the world.
The Pet Shop Boys worked
together with such famous people as: Liza Minnelli, Dusty Springfield, Sam Taylor-Wood,
Tina Turner, David Bowie, Bruce Weber, Electronic, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue... Pet Shop Boys
still working, having no rivals, due to their being unique.
