Neil Frances Tennant
(b. 10.07.1954, New Castle, U.K.) took up music in his early childhood.
He started playing guitar and 'cello. As a professional musician
Neil began his career in 1970 in the band Dust in New Castle. In
the 80-ies he worked as a reporter for the English music magazine Smash
Hits until he met Chris Lowe and they decided to start Pet Shop Boys project.
As Neil admitted later, his experience of working in the magazine played
a very important role in his biography: "I learned to edit. And in writing songs
it's very useful to be able to edit, to take up a bad blocks and keep the good
blocks".
Neil is an emotional and sensitive person, he has been keen on history
and arts from his childhood. As he says, every song written by him shows
an event which has happened in his life. A typical example of this - songs "It's
a sin" and "This must be the place, I waited years to leave" which tell us about
Neil's youth he spent in the Saint Cadber's church school near Newcastle
where he was brought up. But a real biographical album is Bilingual, which was
released in September of 1996.
"With years I started to understand myself better. BILINGUAL is too private
an album to joke".
This is one of the most interesting Neil's quotations:
"Simple music is the most difficult music to write" (TV-6, Moscow).
